Pregnancy after fertility care

A positive test can bring relief and new questions at the same time. The transition from fertility treatment to antenatal care needs an agreed plan, not the assumption that all uncertainty has ended.

Clarify the handover

Ask who is responsible for the next review, how your treatment history will reach the pregnancy-care team and where to obtain help between appointments. Keep the relevant dates, medicines and reports together. A clear handover reduces the need to repeat information without making this website part of your clinical care.

Your care plan is individual

Antenatal care includes appointments, discussion of health history and appropriate screening. The NHS information linked below describes a UK pathway; arrangements elsewhere differ. Your team should explain which appointments and investigations apply to your circumstances rather than expecting you to infer them from a generic calendar.

Pregnancy dating

The due date is an estimate used in care planning, not a promised birthday. Dating after assisted reproduction may use treatment dates and embryo information. Ask your team which date they are using. Do not replace it with an online menstrual-date calculation.

Questions about medicines

Agree who explains any continuation or change of treatment-related medicines. Keep the instructions in writing where possible. Do not start, stop or adjust a medicine because another patient used a different schedule, or because a general article appears to describe the same situation.

Emotions need not follow a simple script

You can feel hopeful, worried, cautious about telling people or unsettled by previous loss. Ask what support is available if this affects everyday life. You do not have to demonstrate gratitude by suppressing concerns; partners may need their own space too.

Know where to seek help

Ask for your care team’s contact details and emergency instructions. New bleeding, pain or other worrying symptoms need the appropriate professional response, not reassurance from an online guide. If symptoms are severe or you may need immediate help, use local emergency services.

Questions people ask

Does a good early result remove all pregnancy risks?

No. Continue the individual care and follow-up advised by your team.

Can I use the calculator after IVF?

Use the due date confirmed by your clinical team. Our menstrual-date tool is not designed to date an IVF pregnancy.
